    Before you go

✓ There are no emergency, medical nor rescue services. Each visitor is responsible for his or her safety. There is no rescue team nor emergency personnel available. The closest hospital is in Puerto Varas. Serious injuries can result in death given the difficulty and time required to evacuate.

✓ Previous trekking experience is essential. This valley is laiden with hazardous obstacles. Each season there are serious injuries mostly due to the lack of experience hiking or climbing. There are no easy or beginner trails. If this is your first time, or have minimal experience, doing multiday trekking over rough terrain, this valley may not be for you.

✓ Expect rain and mud. The Cochamó Valley is a temperate rainforest that receives up to 3,000 mm of rainfall annually. There is no dry season, so there is a high chance of rain during your stay. Be sure to bring your rain gear. Please note that the campground does not offer refunds or date changes less than 7 days prior to your arrival date.

✓ There is no communication nor cell phone coverage. Notify your family/friends of your trip to the valley and your return date. Once there you may have no phone signal nor means of communication with the outside.

✓ Reserve your stay well in advance. Due to high demand during the summer months and holidays it is best to book as far in advance as possible. There is a controlled capacity in the valley to minimize the impact on the environment.

✓ There is no garbage service. Each camper must carry out their garbage. Please recycle at the Vistor Center located at the trailhead.

✓ There is no electricity. Be sure to charge your devices ahead of time, or bring a portable solar charger.

✓ There is no vehicle access. The only way in and out is via foot or horse traffic. This trail is not apt for bikes. Motorized vehicles are prohibited.

    Camping & valley norms

    • Overnight stay only with confirmed reservation. To spend the night in the La Junta sector, it is necessary to have a confirmed reservation at one of the authorized campsites.

    • Going for the day. No previous reservation is necessary but you must enter the trail before 9 a.m. (recommended between 7 and 8 a.m.) and be in very good physical condition to be able to do the 24 kilometers round trip walking during daylight hours. For more info, see La Junta in a Day.

    • The trail closes at 15:00 hrs. (14:00 hrs. in autumn). The trail opens at 7 a.m. and closes at 3 p.m. (2 p.m. in the fall), and no climbing is allowed after that time.

    • Timetable for descent from La Junta sector. You should also not start your descent from La Junta after 3 p.m. in order to do the entire hike during daylight hours and prevent accidents and other inconveniences.

    • Check-in and check-out. Check-in hasta las 8:30 p.m. y check-out hasta las 12 del mediodía.

    • The trail is not a public access It is prohibited to camp on or near the trail, and on the coast of the rivers. You can only camp in designated campgrounds. Respect the land owners in this valley and avoid camping on their lands without permission.

    • Minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. This cannot be supplemented with notarized parental permission. We make some exceptions when the groups are organized by universities or other institutes that go with professors and/or guides from the area. Also, given the risks inherent in the rugged and isolated environment, lack of medical services and the history of accidents, Cochamó Valley is not an appropriate destination for young people without experience in this type of terrain.

    • You must hike out all your garbage. Each camper must carry out their garbage. Please recycle at the Vistor Center located at the trailhead.

    Reservation criteria

✼ Confirming your reservation. Complete the reservation form and wait for a response. You do not have a reservation until you receive confirmation.

✼ Be patient. The answer may take time. We are located in a very isolated area, use satellite technology and cannot always access the Internet on a daily basis. There is no telephone signal here either.

✼ The camping has a strict max capacity to help collaborate in the care for the valley's nature and to prevent the over saturation of its installations (composting toliets, solar showers, roofed areas, biofilters, etc.).

✼ We foster a multi-generational space. We consider percentages of the campsite's capacity for different age groups and types of stays. Adults, young people, families with children, long stays and special interest groups, such as scientific research, education and others. Therefore, when you make a reservation there may or may not be room for your group even if the campsite is not full.

✼ Large groups. If however one splits a group into several requests, the reservation(s) may be rejected upon arrival at the campsite, resulting in the total loss of payment.

✼ Last moment reservations requests. Please make your reservation request at least 6 days prior to your arrival day in order to process it. If you are less days away from your visit, you can still make your reservation, but although we will make a great effort to answer, due to the high volume of requests and the process that requires confirmation, it is not always possible.

✼ If you arrive by air or bus to Puerto Montt, DO NOT attempt to arrive to La Junta on the same day. Flights and bus services are often delayed and transportation services from Puerto Montt/Puerto Varas are infrequent and fill up quickly in high season. This means that many people do not make it to the trailhead on time, with the consequent loss of their reservations. Therefore, Camping La Junta recommends stayiing in Cochamó the night before your reservation.  This will avoid stress and help you to relax and enjoy the trail more.

✼ Campsites. During high season the campground is at maximum capacity so your site may or may not be close to friends who have a separate reservation.
